Caring For Children With Special Needs
I began my career as a health care provider almost 30 years ago. At that time “special needs” children were either limited to 1 or 2 children you heard about in your community or it was a very well-kept secret. I tend to think it was the former and that the number of children with special needs has increased at an alarming rate. With this in mind I believe it is important to discuss not only how we can best support these children in need, but also what, if anything, we can do to lessen their growing numbers.
So where do we begin? For 25 years I have looked for a means to help people achieve and maintain the highest level of health possible and to prevent disease. To develop a health care model as opposed to a sick care model that simply treats symptoms with drugs and deals with the more full blown problems as they appear.
The True Key To Health Is Digestion
What have I found? I have found that digestion is the overlooked key to health! After all, digestion is how we get nutrients from our food into our bodies to nourish our organ systems. And it is our poor food choices that cost us… which result in the body compensating somewhere (in our 10 organ systems) for what it is lacking. All SYMPTOMS result from this compensation, which is what we call Under-NUTRITION.
The ability of the cells, tissues and organs of the body to function at their highest level is totally nutrition dependent. But what if we don’t digest, absorb and eliminate properly?
By utilizing a 100 year old test called a 24 hour Urinalysis we can gather evidence of what your child is having a difficult time digesting, assimilating and eliminating. We can then make specific recommendations. Each child is unique and whether they present with the same special need or not the course of care is tailored to them specifically. This is not a “this for that” approach.
What is true for all of us is also true for our children with extra needs; the body ALWAYS works to maintain normal function. So whether the child presents with ADHD, allergies, autism, digestive disorders, anxiety, depression or immune problems, there must be a specific stress exhausting the body. The goal is the same. Find the source of stress, remove it, nourish the body and remove excess waste.
What Is Brain Based Wellness?
Next, we turn our attention to the function of the brain using a Brain Based Wellness Technique called Bal-A-Vis-X. Bal-A-Vis-X is an acronym for: Balance / Auditory / Vision eXercises. There are over 300 series of patterns which vary in complexity and are all deeply rooted in rhythm.
The use of the Bal-A-Vis-X program will help:
- learning disabled students to improve cognitive integration
- behaviorally disordered students “settle” their behavior
- the anxiety ridden child
- attention deficit AND hyperactive students to decrease impulsivity and increase attention span
It has been found that, through movement, a child’s brain and body can become integrated for their optimal state of learning and well-being. Ultimately, this means a child can cope with the stress and struggles of learning new information in the traditional school setting.
We utilize this program in our Children’s Wellness Program to enable the mind-body system to experience the natural symmetrical flow of a pendulum which brings about a state of systemic integration which then enables the child to function (see, hear, attend to, process, produce, etc.) at their best.
